 End of Life Care

Karen Stevens, Regional Development Officer for Surrey and Sussex, has sent us some End of Life Care resources designed to inform and support those involved in End of Life Care. There are three documents which you can read here: the first is a ‘supporting me’ booklet covering end of life care, the second is a ‘planning ahead’ template for direct employers and the third is a signposting document for end of life care workforce development resources. You can contact Karen for more information via karen.stevens@skillsforcare.org.uk or on 01903 752280.

Milton Keynes Personal Assistant Forum

Suzanne Pangbourne, on behalf of Milton Keynes Council and supported by Skills for Care, has led a pilot project which gave Personal Assistants in Milton Keynes their own Forum where they could network and access the free-e-learning resources available via the Log on to Care project. You can read the full report here (plus one appendix, here).

SmartScreen.co.uk: Dedicated Online Support from the City & Guilds of London Institute

SmartScreen issues a regular e-bulletin which offers refreshingly a honest and interesting digest of new legislation and policy in health and social care. You can also track the progress of bills through parliament like, for example, the Support and Protection for Elderly People and Adults at Risk of Abuse Bill 2010-11. Click here to download the latest bulletin.

CIS Assessment: Top Training Tips

Sarah Knapp from CIS Assessment places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of training in the workplace thereby reducing expensive classroom training as a direct result. She has written a helpful paper discussing the pros and cons of various training methods which you can read here (PDF).

Skills for Care: Oxford Brookes Health & Social Care Foundation Degree

Donna Bunce of SfC recently met Caroline Hardy at Oxford Brookes to map this foundation degree against the QCF units in the Level 5 Diploma. Caroline is very keen to communicate the availability this qualification to those in the care sector. You can download her summary of the foundation degree here (Word document).

Presentations from the Good Practice Event on 23rd February 2011

Richard Burden from SECAS/FOXSCE has kindly made available those presentations that he has received in electronic form for this event. You can download them here: End of Life Care Advanced Planning, Fremantle Apprenticeship Model, Fremantle Dementia Care, Gold Standards Framework, Person-centred Care in a Dementia Setting and, finally, the Skills for Care Dignity Map.

You can also download two PDFs containing information about the Advanced Diploma in Leading Care Services from Oxford Brookes University: PDF1, PDF2.

Pressure Ulcers and How to Prevent and Manage Them

NHS Bucks has been developing tools for preventing and managing pressure ulcers and has now decided to make these tools available to a  wider range of healthcare staff in care homes and domiciliary care. Click the links to read and download the five documents concerned: NICE Pressure Ulcers, Pressure Ulcer Guide, RCA Pressure Ulcer Tool (Word document), Wound Assessment Competency (Word document), Wound Chart.

New Unified Do Not Attempt CPR policy

NHS South Central have now implemented their new uDNACPR policy across all care settings. The uDNACPR replaces the previous DNAR form and any existing DNARs should have already been transferred onto the new lilac uDNACPR form. It is important for all care providers to use the same, new form as this is the only one which will be recognised. Click here to download a copy of the form to be used (printed on lilac paper as specified). Click here to download instructions for using the form and click here to download a copy of the Adult Policy on DNACPR.

National Dementia Strategy

‘Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained’, the Department of Health’s document on risk guidance for people with dementia, provides guidance on best practice in assessing, managing and enabling risk for people living with dementia. It is based on evidence and person-centred practice and within the context of Living Well with Dementia: A National Dementia Strategy and Putting People First. The guidance is aimed at commissioners and providers in health and care across all sectors. Follow this link to download the document.
